CTE has done so much work in this area awhile ago but I’m not sure it was ever taken to a point of being able to create alignement between secondary and college levels of CTE. would love to hear your insights about how this more structural approach to CBE is the same or different from the work in CTE that was done previously.

Joe – In the CBE model, the “work” actually shifts from the teacher to the student as the student takes more ownership of their learning. Student agency becomes a priority for teacher and student as the personal learning playlist is developed.

I think we previously did better measuring students by their competency and letting the stay on a lesson or objective until it was mastered. With the tremendous pressure of standardized testing and school year calendars, we have moved away a bit from that.

Stephanie — we still don’t know if we have to throw out the whole traditional system or if there are just parts of it that are problematic. For example, courses are a way of organizing learning that can probably be helpful in next generationl learning. But schools can move away from it if they just want to use the competencies and standards. I think age-based grades can also still be helpful in organizing communities of learners that support each other and are important for adolescent development. So I think it is important to test out ideas and see what the value is of each piece of the traditional system

Dave — i think you talking about the greater flexiblity you can get from blended learning when you mention 1:1? correct? I think there are lots of districts that are still traditional that are using blended learning. It’s not impossible. just not sure what their results are?

My school, American School based in Lansing, Illlinois, is a private, accredited distance ed high school. We have been using competency ed (Mastery Learning) for over 100 years. Courses include defined objectives, self-check tests (formative assessments), unit assessments, completely self-paced. This fosters the self-directed learning that the competency ed “movement” values!

I view scaffolding as meeting a student where they are at in their learning and then supporting them as they move forward. Scaffolding in the traditional sense means to support kids to their grade level curriculum–often overlooks learning gaps they have.

I think first that you need to have a plan on paper that goes through a backwards design of what skills are needed and how that applies to a specific subject area. You must also take out the middle man who is looking to make a buck on this process. Then you can adjust the level, how it is taught, how it is perceived, etc to get the equity in there. Those required skills are universal.

I disagree that a school of 1000 students with transcripts and GPA’s is focuused on ranking and sorting and selecting. If teachers are focussed on standards, use assessment for learning and are criterion-referenced in their thinking then we can have success for all.
