Diffusing Innovation: Beyond Pockets of Excellence

This session presumed to explore ways in which one might accelerate learning practices in classrooms, it was however more of a philosophical discussion. The position was to take a creative though and turn it into reality. The group advocated amplifying what works and suppress what does not. Artificial targets and goals should be avoided when planning a new strategy. More growth is obtained from failure and administration should provide safe environments for teachers to explore.  Unfortunately, the educational system bleeds out innovation even before a teacher hits the classroom.

School Design Mini-Hackathon: A Student-Centered Process for New School Model Development

This presentation introduced that accelerated school design process grounded in student needs. Participants worked in groups, to practice key questions and decision making regarding instructional design, staffing and competencies.

Personalized Learning

Through student-directed inquiry projects.

The purpose of an inquiry is to allow students to develop and demonstrate core competencies through a topic of interest. Learn the value of inquiry-based learning, the process involved (from brainstorming ideas to community presentations), the role of the teacher and peers, and online tools used to guide this type of learning.

Hi Stephanie– would love to hear your thoughts about CBE and CTE. CTE has done so much work in this area awhile ago but I’m not sure it was ever taken to a point of being able to create alignement between secondary and college levels of CTE. would love to hear your insights about how this more structural approach to CBE is the same or different from the work in CTE that was done previously.

Joe – In the CBE model, the “work” actually shifts from the teacher to the student as the student takes more ownership of their learning. Student agency becomes a priority for teacher and student as the personal learning playlist is developed.

Can we truly personalize learning without implementing a competency based model? It seems districts start with wanting to personalize learning (1:1), transition through standards based learning, and realize CBE is the “mature” state of personalized learning.

I think we previously did better measuring students by their competency and letting the stay on a lesson or objective until it was mastered. With the tremendous pressure of standardized testing and school year calendars, we have moved away a bit from that.

– Renee 1 joined the Main Room. ( 2:18 PM ) –

chris sturgis 2:18 PM
Stephanie — we still don’t know if we have to throw out the whole traditional system or if there are just parts of it that are problematic. For example, courses are a way of organizing learning that can probably be helpful in next generationl learning. But schools can move away from it if they just want to use the competencies and standards. I think age-based grades can also still be helpful in organizing communities of learners that support each other and are important for adolescent development. So I think it is important to test out ideas and see what the value is of each piece of the traditional system

My school, American School based in Lansing, Illlinois, is a private, accredited distance ed high school. We have been using competency ed (Mastery Learning) for over 100 years. This fosters the self-directed learning that the competency ed “movement” values!

I view scaffolding as meeting a student where they are at in their learning and then supporting them as they move forward. Scaffolding in the traditional sense means to support kids to their grade level curriculum–often overlooks learning gaps they have.

What has been learned about overcoming the barrier of time bound, mass administed state assessments to students of the same age at the same time? Students love learning about and are empowered by their own data but it must be highly relevant.

ebarilla 2 2:40 PM
I agree. In traditional scaffolding, not one ensures success at one level prior to moving on to next

Suzan Thompson 2:40 PM
I do tend to agree. It’s more about meeting them where they are.

Norma Caballero 2:41 PM
Another thing, is the resistance of some teacher to really implement competency at class

Oliver-excellent question. We need to move toward CBE where it doesn’t exist, but how do we compensate for the strict accountability with state testing?

Biggest challenge I see, mirrors what Rose said. How can we embed resources, pedagogy and ideas, instread of layering on top. Can’t be seen as an additional, but a different way to approach teaching and learning.

I think first that you need to have a plan on paper that goes through a backwards design of what skills are needed and how that applies to a specific subject area. You must also take out the middle man who is looking to make a buck on this process. Then you can adjust the level, how it is taught, how it is perceived, etc to get the equity in there. Those required skills are universal.

l walters 1 2:53 PM
Maybe, if we start with trusting student voice, we have a chance to change the system.

Marie Watson 2:53 PM

I disagree that a school of 1000 students with transcripts and GPA’s is focuused on ranking and sorting and selecting. If teachers are focussed on standards, use assessment for learning and are criterion-referenced in their thinking then we can have success for all.

can a low SES student/family afford a private distance ed school?
